Coaching Requirements

Become a coach

Coaches are key to running our organization! BDHA is always looking for volunteers to provide a positive and rewarding experience for our young athletes.

When you volunteer as a coach, you'll have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of our youth. You'll provide them with the guidance, support, and encouragement they need to develop their skills, build their confidence, and learn important life lessons that will serve them well on and off the ice.

Not only is coaching incredibly rewarding, but it's also a lot of fun! You'll get to work with a great group of kids, meet other passionate volunteers, and be part of a thriving community dedicated to promoting youth sports.

So if you're looking for a way to give back and make a positive impact, we encourage you to sign up as a coaching volunteer today. Your time and dedication will help shape the future of our young athletes and make a lasting impact on their lives.

step 1

USA Hockey registration is required annually for Head and Assistant Coaches. Save your confirmation code as you will need it for the additional requirements. When registering, be sure to choose the Player/Coach option when asked "What type of member are you registering?"

step 2

Background screening is required, and is good for two seasons. Coaches need to complete the background screening BEFORE they are allowed on the ice. Due to new requirements from the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (“USOPC”), USA Hockey will be implementing a national level background screening policy. This process has a $30 fee.

step 3

ALL Head and Assistant Coaches need to complete the USA Hockey SafeSport online training prior to being placed on a roster. SafeSport registration is free, and SafeSport training is now required every year. In many cases, all that is required is a quick "refresher" course that can be completed in around 20 minutes.

For login, you will be redirected to your MyHockeyHQ Portal Login screen. If you do not yet have an account here please follow the directions for "First time members," read carefully. Once you are in your My Member HQ and on your Dashboard you will see SafeSport Training on the right half of the page.

step 4

Complete Age-Specific Modules for EACH playing level you will be coaching.  If you have completed an online specific age module in a previous year, you do not have to re-take that module (please verify your expiration). Coaches completed modules can be found in the USA Hockey Online Coaches Certification list.

step 5

Ensure your Coach Education Program or CEP level certification is up to date and appropriate for the level you are coaching.   If your CEP is expiring, you MUST find the next available class on-line and complete prior to 12/31/2025.

EXCEPTION: Coaches of 6U, 8U or younger may remain at Level 1 or their current level even if it has expired. Review your current CEP level with the USA Hockey Online Coaches Certification list. Register for an available clinic at  USA Hockey Coaching Clinics. CEP Levels 1, 2 and 3 clinics are now provided virtual.

step 6

The last step is to register as a Coach with the Beaver Dam Hockey Association.
