ADM
What is the American Development Model (ADM)?
We’re excited to offer ADM (American Development Model) sessions as part of the Beaver Dam Hockey Association’s commitment to player development.
The American Development Model (ADM) in youth hockey is a framework created by USA Hockey to enhance the development of young hockey players across the United States. It focuses on age-appropriate training and development methods that align with the physical, emotional, and cognitive stages of children as they grow and progress in the sport.
Why ADM?
- Extra ice time before the season officially starts.
- Focused, station-based training that maximizes development.
- Builds confidence, teamwork, and love for the game.
Benefits for Players
- Developmental: Improves skating, passing, shooting, and game sense.
- Practical: Adds value with more ice time and meaningful practice reps.

Key components
- Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD): This involves a structured pathway for player development, taking into account the various stages of physical and mental growth. It emphasizes skill development, physical literacy, and long-term enjoyment of the sport.
- Age-Appropriate Training: The ADM advocates for training programs and activities that are tailored to the specific age groups of players, ensuring that drills and exercises are suitable for their developmental stage.
- Small-Area Games: These are games played on smaller ice surfaces or confined spaces, which promote increased puck touches, decision-making skills, and creativity among players.
- Cross-Ice Hockey: For younger age groups, cross-ice hockey (playing on a smaller portion of the rink) is encouraged to maximize participation, engagement, and skill development.
- Multi-Sport Participation: The ADM encourages young athletes to participate in a variety of sports and activities to develop overall athleticism, coordination, and motor skills, which can benefit their hockey performance in the long run.
- Quality Coaching: Providing coaches with resources, education, and training to effectively teach and mentor young players is crucial in the ADM. USA Hockey offers coaching certification programs and resources to support this.
